The New Year and new term kicked off with a reminder that CSM final year students are half way there, as four MA courses showed their ‘Work in Progress’ at this year’s interim show. MA Textile Futures, MA Industrial Design, MA Communication Design and MA Narrative Environments exhibited their projects at the end of CSM’s Street – to gain insights, feedback and critique from colleagues, students, staff and visitors. Digital technologies continue to disrupt what was once the core of many businesses: retail has long been shifting to the virtual marketplace, print media has and is responding to the way information is accessed and consumed, and new tools and technologies are re-shaping the way nearly all products are, and can be, designed and produced. More and more, traditional industries and businesses are learning to understand the importance of digital, and with it, their user and audience. With this realisation, the design profession has received much attention for its ability to identify and translate human factors – more specifically the underlying need and desirability – that then drive the digital experience.
Within this landscape of possibilities, design is poised to sit alongside (not behind) technology and science in the research and development of new products and services. Projections show that 5.1 billion people will own mobile phones in four years time; nearly 1 billion more than do so today. And as mobile phones and other devices become more prevalent in both developed and developing economies, so will cloud computing and storage applications continue to flourish. On a daily basis I collaborate, store and share files with my Central Saint Martins classmates and colleagues on platforms such as Dropbox, Google Drive and iCloud. While technology continues to evolve and push the way we communicate, collaborate, and make, it is important that we are equally aware of that same push on our planet. With the increased prevalence of digital technology in design, this year’s London Design Festival saw an entire weekend dedicated to the phenomenon at the V&A’s Digital Design Weekend. Described as a series of events that aimed at celebrating collaborations in digital art, design and science, the weekend included a full programme of installations, labs, activities, talks and screenings which very much recalled the format and atmosphere of a final degree show. Artists, designers and scientists were seen describing and sharing their work with the museum’s visitors, including CSM’s own recent MA Textile Futures graduates showing their work in the Sackler Centre. An excellent example of learning in action – recent MA Innovation Management graduate Vuong Tong has developed UAL Exchange, an iOS Application that aims to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge share across the University of the Arts London (UAL). Developed while working at Central Saint Martins’ Innovation Centre last year, Vuong invited several of his fellow MA:IM colleagues (Digital Present’s Rita Fernandez included) to take part in the ideation stage of the project. The final proposal was funded by SEE (Student Enterprise & Employability), and recently Rita helped the preparations to launch UAL Exchange on the App Store, and to the UAL community. The dust has settled and the 2013 Central Saint Martins Degree Shows are over. With work ranging from fashion to architecture in Show 2 the sheer amount of projects presented was enough to make any visitor experience sensory overload. To fully appreciate each space the show was best explored in stages, but when taken in as a whole overarching themes began to emerge. These themes could change depending on ones interests, but for me the focus on memory and a sense of nostalgia was strong. As technology becomes more and more pervasive in our lives, this preoccupation with understanding and preserving memory and the craft of yesteryear can be seen as the design graduates response to this growing phenomenon. While the rate at which technology evolves becomes more rapid, molding and shaping the way we interact with each other and the products and services we use, design will play a crucial role in allowing us to adapt. Upon entering the CSM Letterpress Workshop I felt like I’d gone back in time. A stark difference to the aluminium MACs and flat PCs in the digital printing space set just on the other side of the glass partition. With the smell of ink and wood, textured colours, and sounds of the American south playing overhead the workshop’s atmosphere fills your senses. After this first wave of nostalgia had passed, it soon became apparent that the workshop was anything but stuck in the past. Continue reading
In its broadest sense assistive technology is understood as any device that enables people with disabilities, however, in the context of the University of the Arts London it is a device or software that is used to support learning. This support covers a third of the university’s staff and students who are estimated to fall on some spectrum of the dyslexia scale, in addition to the large international student body that may seek language support. As an MA student at CSM, I am aware that at least one of my twenty-eight classmates has and receives tutoring for dyslexia, while the majority of my cohort are non-native English speakers and use a variety of tools to support their learning.
The University-wide implementation of Moodle – a major element of the new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) – is in full swing, as one of a number of Digital Life projects currently being undertaken by UAL. The Blackboard plug is being pulled – so to speak – at the end of July and Moodle will be taking its place. So imminent is the migration that three MA courses at CSM have been using live Moodle sites since January. Continue reading
A faithful follower of the ever-growing website, blog and now magazine 1 Granary, Rita Fernandez recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the smart and ambitious BA Fashion student behind 1 Granary, Olya Kuryshchuk. Below she explains the motivation for first launching the blog in 2011, and describing how it has subsequently become a valuable tool for her studies, practice and collaboration. Learning from successes and failures has been invaluable for Olya, and through the experience of running the site she has found that there is no way around digital technology for today’s graduates.
