Cavan Pledge, Head of Art at Hillview School in Kent, and a key partner in Creative Technology Day 2014, reflects upon his experience of the event held at Central Saint Martins on Thursday 2 October.

“It was an exciting and unique event, which provided participants with a vast ‘tree’ of information connecting Primary School computer coding, Secondary School implementation of the new Computing Curriculum at the roots, with a broad trunk of creative application and exploration at HE Level to a canopy of creative individuals, businesses and cultural organisations using cutting edge computer technologies in a range of specialist applications.” Continue reading

Designs on eLearning Conference 2014 – Texas, US

Flags 2014

The 2014 DeL conference took place in Texas in September 2014. It brought together academics from Canada, America and Europe to explore the impact of digital technologies on the evolving pedagogic landscape, and asked how these transformations are influencing art and design teaching practices. Through a series of presentations, workshops and panel discussions, the event questioned how we can maximize the potential of digital technology to improve student learning.

The University of the Arts London made a broad and deep contribution to this international conference, sharing research, case studies, futures thinking and technical know-how.

When the blank sheet syndrome hits, or when your research is at a dead-end, digital resources can come to the rescue and provide inspiration. There are a multitude of sites posting about exciting new designers, trends and works – but which are the ones that can get our creative juices flowing every time?

Sarah Kante spoke to some Central Saint Martins students to get some ideas of their ‘go to’ websites, as well as asking some of her own network of art and design practitioners for the online resources that never disappoint when it comes to inspiration and research. LCC journalism student, James Childs is researching the impact of digital technology on Hip Hop through multiple lenses. In this second article, James meets 25 year-old South London rapper and producer Richi Fingaz who has published several music videos on YouTube. This article will explore how digital technology has impacted upon the experience of the Hip Hop producer and the production process.  Through analysing the technological change in Hip Hop production, this article seeks to understand the creative process of constructing a Hip Hop beat – where questions of authorship and editing become of importance. Exploring online learning for art and design

As we are well aware, digital technologies have impacted massively upon the ways in which students learn, and how they engage with one another and with the University. The learning landscape is morphing, and technologies are playing an instrumental part, e.g. the rapid expansion of online learning provision through MOOCs, the phenomenal use of YouTube as an informal learning platform, Google’s new Helpout offering, and an array of other online initiatives – all available across multiple personal devices.

In this turbulent world where much formal and informal learning is undertaken online, Sarah Kante takes a swift look at MOOCs, e-learning, and ponders: what is a good online learning experience, and how can it be applied to art and design courses?

Literacy grabs the headlines every now and then, and whilst this is a major political and social issue, the type of literacy we are exploring here is slightly different.

Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of images. This is based on the idea that meaning can be communicated through images, and that they can therefore be read.

In this article, Sarah Kante looks at visual literacy in the digital age. With most of the tools and media we interact with on a day-to-day basis relying heavily on images, are words taking a backstage? Is 21st century communication mainly visual and if so, is this an issue for society at large?

Digital technologies continue to disrupt what was once the core of many businesses: retail has long been shifting to the virtual marketplace, print media has and is responding to the way information is accessed and consumed, and new tools and technologies are re-shaping the way nearly all products are, and can be, designed and produced. More and more, traditional industries and businesses are learning to understand the importance of digital, and with it, their user and audience. With this realisation, the design profession has received much attention for its ability to identify and translate human factors – more specifically the underlying need and desirability – that then drive the digital experience.

Within this landscape of possibilities, design is poised to sit alongside (not behind) technology and science in the research and development of new products and services. How then is the digital economy shaping the way design is being adopted and championed in the non-creative sectors, and what could CSM graduates bring to this new market place? Continue reading
