The Bigger Picture of Design

Design practices do not exist in their own little bubbles. They exist in relation to the ‘bigger picture’ of the world we live in. To address the many cultural, social and environmental issues that designers must consider, CSM runs the collaborative ‘Bigger Picture’ project for second year students in the Autumn Term. Design students from Product, Graphics, Ceramics and Architecture work together, and use a blog to work towards a collective understanding of big issues.

Opening the studio doors

LCF Studio at JPSAs a foundation student, (many moons ago), I was encouraged to wander the studio spaces at every opportunity. I wasn’t always welcomed with open arms, but it was understood that this was a right to be exercised in art school. Sometimes, the 3rd-year students would even talk to me!

Fast-forward (gulp) nearly thirty years to UAL and such encounters are not always so easy to come by. Operating in the middle of London, space and security issues close down some of the opportunities to see what’s going on outside your own course ‘silo’ – for both staff and students. It’s particularly challenging in London College of Fashion, operating across numerous sites. Given these physical limitations, what role might digital spaces play in bringing us together? Physical and digital spaces enabling openness and collaboration

By bringing most of Central Saint Martins’ courses under one roof, the King’s Cross building is the embodiment of collaboration, openness and sharing. No longer are we unaware of what’s happening in the studio or the workshop next door. The multiple collaborations already born from the openness of the building and the mingling of students from different practices are to be cherished and celebrated. This culture of openness and collaborative making extends beyond the College and into all forms of physical and digital spaces; disciplinary boundaries become porous, as we find ourselves sharing more and more – be it in the virtual world or in the real world, or mixed-realities. In this post, UAL alumna Sarah Kante explores just a few of the ways that our students, and the community of global makers, are participating in collaborative and multi-disciplinary making spaces that explore technology, electronics, design, art and much, much more. CSM MA Textile Futures at the V&A Digital Design Weekend

Design is Everywhere

With the increased prevalence of digital technology in design, this year’s London Design Festival saw an entire weekend dedicated to the phenomenon at the V&A’s Digital Design Weekend. Described as a series of events that aimed at celebrating collaborations in digital art, design and science, the weekend included a full programme of installations, labs, activities, talks and screenings which very much recalled the format and atmosphere of a final degree show. Artists, designers and scientists were seen describing and sharing their work with the museum’s visitors, including CSM’s own recent MA Textile Futures graduates showing their work in the Sackler Centre. UAL Exchange: a new app for cross-disciplinary collaboration

UAL Exchange AppAn excellent example of learning in action – recent MA Innovation Management graduate Vuong Tong has developed UAL Exchange, an iOS Application that aims to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge share across the University of the Arts London (UAL). Developed while working at Central Saint Martins’ Innovation Centre last year, Vuong invited several of his fellow MA:IM colleagues (Digital Present’s Rita Fernandez included) to take part in the ideation stage of the project. The final proposal was funded by SEE (Student Enterprise & Employability), and recently Rita helped the preparations to launch UAL Exchange on the App Store, and to the UAL community. A faithful follower of the ever-growing website, blog and now magazine 1 Granary, Rita Fernandez recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the smart and ambitious BA Fashion student behind 1 Granary, Olya Kuryshchuk. Below she explains the motivation for first launching the blog in 2011, and describing how it has subsequently become a valuable tool for her studies, practice and collaboration. Learning from successes and failures has been invaluable for Olya, and through the experience of running the site she has found that there is no way around digital technology for today’s graduates. Over the course of the Spring Term Rita Fernandez joined several of her classmates from the MA Innovation Management course to participate in a research assignment as part of My Digital Life, a UAL initiative aimed at interrogating student engagement with digital technologies. The research culminated in a workshop-style event held at Central Saint Martins, where four groups presented to an audience comprised of students, staff and faculty from across the University’s colleges. Skype at CSM: staff survey feedback

Historically Central Saint Martins has had a tricky relationship with Skype. For a number of years, and for a number of reasons, Skype services were not accessible through the university’s network. Whilst one argument maintained that the university’s ‘digital experience’ provision was less than staff and students would expect when outside of the institution, a counter claim was that Skype used excessive bandwidth and posed potential security issues for the university network as a whole. Both points were valid, and the situation highlights the complex issues faced by institutions worldwide when dealing with the rapid advancement of digital systems.

Today, however, as highlighted in the recent CSM Social Media and Digital Tools survey, there is a marked increase in the number of staff using Skype as part of their university life. Continue reading
