The craft of 3D processes

3D processes, such as laser-cutting, 3D printing and modelling, are an integral part of the University community’s experiments with form and materials, and their importance is growing across subject areas. Undergoing rapid advances, these processes have been talked about in the media, integrated in our syllabus, and have stimulated our imaginations in myriad ways.

UAL alumna Sarah Kante talks to CSM Specialist Technician Billy Dickinson about Almost Lost – a recent project for English Heritage – his views on the craft of 3D processes, and his thoughts about their associated myths and realities. Continue reading

The Learning Zone at King’s Cross

The Learning Zone at King’s Cross is a new intervention at Central Saint Martins. Since September 2012, 2 new learning zones (social learning spaces open to any UAL student) have been in operation, replacing the former facility at High Holborn. One is located in the library at Elephant and Castle, and the other is here on the fourth floor of the Granary Building. With space a premium and seven-day-a-week access, both aim to provide students with flexible, accessible and comfortable workspaces. David Bracegirdle is LZ@KX manager and spoke to us about his receptive, student-focused approach to the space, the range of technologies on offer and the importance of integrating digital and traditional resources.

Developing OTTeR: video tutorials and workshop support

OTTeR – Teaching and Technical Resources – is a portal designed to support students at CSM by providing information about workshop staff, facilities, accessibility and crucially, video tutorials. Developed by Ray Barker, Muz Mehmet and Angus Main, it features a range of videos that reinforce workshop inductions, and equipment and technique demonstrations, but hopes are to make it comprehensive, covering as many disciplines as possible. CSM’s technical specialist, Ray Barker, spoke to us about OTTeR’s development so far, its crossover with Lynda.com, and the way digital tools like these support student learning.
