The Bigger Picture of Design

Design practices do not exist in their own little bubbles. They exist in relation to the ‘bigger picture’ of the world we live in. To address the many cultural, social and environmental issues that designers must consider, CSM runs the collaborative ‘Bigger Picture’ project for second year students in the Autumn Term. Design students from Product, Graphics, Ceramics and Architecture work together, and use a blog to work towards a collective understanding of big issues.

Exploring online learning for art and design

As we are well aware, digital technologies have impacted massively upon the ways in which students learn, and how they engage with one another and with the University. The learning landscape is morphing, and technologies are playing an instrumental part, e.g. the rapid expansion of online learning provision through MOOCs, the phenomenal use of YouTube as an informal learning platform, Google’s new Helpout offering, and an array of other online initiatives – all available across multiple personal devices.

In this turbulent world where much formal and informal learning is undertaken online, Sarah Kante takes a swift look at MOOCs, e-learning, and ponders: what is a good online learning experience, and how can it be applied to art and design courses?

Welcome to CLTAD, the UAL Centre for Learning and Teaching in Art and Design. Responsible for the development and support of staff, the centre also develops online tools: at the centre of which is Moodle, the core of the new Virtual Learning Environment.  Whilst you are probably familiar with Moodle, CLTAD also develops and maintains other tools that not only support teaching but also enhance the UAL students’ learning experience.

CSM MA Textile Futures at the V&A Digital Design Weekend

Design is Everywhere

With the increased prevalence of digital technology in design, this year’s London Design Festival saw an entire weekend dedicated to the phenomenon at the V&A’s Digital Design Weekend. Described as a series of events that aimed at celebrating collaborations in digital art, design and science, the weekend included a full programme of installations, labs, activities, talks and screenings which very much recalled the format and atmosphere of a final degree show. Artists, designers and scientists were seen describing and sharing their work with the museum’s visitors, including CSM’s own recent MA Textile Futures graduates showing their work in the Sackler Centre. Digital/Material Relationships: CSM Letterpress Workshop

Upon entering the CSM Letterpress Workshop I felt like I’d gone back in time. A stark difference to the aluminium MACs and flat PCs in the digital printing space set just on the other side of the glass partition. With the smell of ink and wood, textured colours, and sounds of the American south playing overhead the workshop’s atmosphere fills your senses. After this first wave of nostalgia had passed, it soon became apparent that the workshop was anything but stuck in the past. Continue reading
